The overwhelming majority of initial antigen encounters, whether innocuous or pathogenic,
occurs at mucosal surfaces, especially those associated with the intestine. Moreover, this
surface is constitutively bathed in a heterogeneous population of microorganisms which
comprise the so-called autochthonous flora [1]. As such, the mucosal surfaces of the
